On this Mother's Day A mother knows. She knows instinctively when her child needs her help, even if the child cannot form the words to tell her. It is the natural order of things---that which we deem blessed about motherhood.

Getting Away I am just back from five glorious days in Puerto Rico, the sun-drenched isle that might as well be our 51st state. A few details about the place in a moment, but first some observations about hitting the road.
The Wonder “The Wonder of It All.” I’ll bet you find yourself humming that catchy jingle for the local resort casino from time to time. I’m here to report that wonder can be found in other places too, some of it from places you would least expect.
No Time for It There are some things for which I cannot see myself investing precious time. Racism is one of those irrational things.
Write or Not You can’t believe everything you read. Soon you might not be able to believe anything you read, if the rash of fraudulent autobiographies continues. Something has gone screwy with several successful non-fiction writers. We are finding out thatthe reason they are so successful--- is that they’re making stuff up.
Being PC I’m “PC.” No, not politically correct if that’s what you’re thinking. Although I try to behave most often in a dignified manner, finding the opportunity to respect others (even annoying politicians who’ll do anything for a vote). I generally refrain from name-calling or insults.
How and When Did That Happen? Pay no attention to the numbers. Put aside the calendar and remember to marginalize milestones dear friends if you want to live more happily ever after. Past regrets and future fears are accentuated when a significant anniversary draws near. I can see you nodding in agreement.

Dinner Conversation, Anyone? A strange event unfolded before me the other evening while out at dinner. It was odd enough to prompt me to compose a column about it. The event, or nonevent, spurred a good deal of table-talk discussion between my wife and friends dining with us.
Needs Pressing As a working member of the fourth estate, I hereby declare that this industry from which I so humbly earn my living is no different than most---flawed, at times sloppy, often insensitive and occasionally downright stupid…although you won’t hear too many in the media admit to any of these perfectly understand human frailties.
Year End Closeouts No top ten list here, just random musings on where we were this past year and what it all might have meant…
Holiday(s) Message Homo sapiens are such a strange bunch. The human animal has confounded even the most brilliant of thinkers since Aristotle wore sandals and Confucius got tuckered out and plopped himself down under a tree.
A Good Day Visit Australia and you’ll hear those welcoming words everywhere. “G’day mate,” is the familiar down-under version of our “How is it going?” heard stateside a couple of billion times a day. Did you ever take into account the deep underlying meaning of what it is to “have a good day?”
Winning and Attitude Have you noticed that winning isn’t what it was cracked up to be. The ones who garner more respect and admiration these days are often those on the losing side. The war between the haves and the have-nots is heating up and the “nots” on playing fields are gaining momentum in the battle for public acceptance.
Three Plays I am not a drama critic nor do I play one on TV. My brush with theatrical criticism includes occupying the last seat in a row where the late, great prince of all Boston critics Elliott Norton sat.
Time to Eat the Doughnuts Did you ever think you would see the day when the symbol for all that’s fat with our nation---the doughnut--- would be chemically tampered with to make it “good for us?” It has happened, my fellow sugar-holics.
At What Cost? Remember when just having a winning attitude won you all kinds of points? Now, the very thought of not winning is propelling talented folks with the stuff that it takes to some very strange places. So many now in public view resort to slashing, slamming and sliming their opponents that this kind of behavior is considered quite normal.
Finally---A Role Model Look at him go. He is what I’ve been hoping for in an athlete. A champion athlete whose name is synonymous with winning, overcoming some pretty tough odds along the way to a gutsy victory. Mention his name and people say, “He sure is special. One in a million. A guy with a flair for the dramatic.”
Proud Parents It is a story just itching for a good one-liner---or ten or twenty of them. Perhaps you read about the Arkansas couple, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar, who made news recently for doing something that happens thousands of times a day. They brought into the world a child. But not just any child.

GPS Calling Last night’s dream, the kind you wake up from in a fright hoping it will never return, just kept doing that---returning as my sleep kicked back in.

She Deserves Our Thanks What to get a country of over three hundred million people hunkered together in this land of seemingly endless opportunity on its 231st birthday?

25 With Love â Part 2 Here is my follow-up report regarding the stealth operation that ended up insuring domestic tranquility and life-long romantic commitment. Our 25th wedding anniversary...

25 With Love So here it is, a mere five hours before my two wonderful kids join my bride and me for a relaxing dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. We are getting together to celebrate Wendy’s birthday tomorrow and our 25th wedding anniversary, whichlands this Wednesday the 27th.

He Who Laughs⦠The odds were a hundred to one against me, The world thought the heights were too high to climb, But people from Missouri never incensed me, Oh I wasn’t a bit concerned…

Symphonic Tussles Must Cease A major American city. Anger and hostility brews beneath the surface until things move out of control and trouble erupts in the stands. Voices are raised, pushing and shoving ensues, a punch is thrown and the authorities are forced to move in.

Watches So I have been out of touch for the past several weeks. The column took a back seat to vacation, the head cold to end all head colds and a pile of work upon my return including the elimination of over 1,000 e-mails, most of them urging me to supporthedge funds in African nations.
