Young basketeball star murdered in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- Springfield police are investigating an early morning murder that took the life of a high school basketball player.

Captain Robert McFarland tells WWLP-TV that 19-year-old Mario Hornsby was with a group of friends in the city's Mason Square neighborhood when another group opened fire on them at about 12:25 on Saturday morning.

Hornsby was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Hornsby was the captain of the Central High School basketball team and was scheduled to graduate this spring.

Police say they are treating the shooting as a homicide but had no additional information when reached Saturday morning.
