Wellesley (AP)  -- Wellesley College has lost a 1921 painting by French cubist Fernand Leger that could be worth millions of dollars.

"Woman and Child" had hung in the college's Davis Museum and Cultural Center since 1954.

It was taken down in 2006 prior to a May renovation and sent to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art for an exhibit that ran until April 2007.

The painting was returned, but remained in a crate because of continuing work at Davis.

The museum realized it was gone last November. Some have speculated it was mistakenly thrown out; others worry it was stolen.

Museum officials, while acknowledging the work is missing, declined further comment to The Boston Globe this week.

Police have been informed and the museum's insurer has paid a claim. Last year, Leger's paintings sold for an average of $2.8 million.
