Weight limit again lowered on I-95 bridge in RI

Providence (AP)  -- State transportation officials have again lowered the weight limit on I-95's Pawtucket River Bridge, but they say the bridge is still safe.

The weight limit on the bridge was cut in November to 22 tons, forcing loaded tractor trailers and heavy trucks to detour onto Providence streets or avoid the city altogether by taking 295.

But on Wednesday, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation said it had to cut the weight limit to 18 tons because the bridge is continuing to deteriorate.

That means full school buses and other large vehicles that had been able to cross the bridge will now have to get off the highway and use city streets.

Transportation Director Michael Lewis says the bridge is safe.

He says they are lowering the limit out of an abundance of caution and to preserve the bridge's condition.
