UMass-Boston professor Padraig O'Malley will be in Baghdad Saturday, as leaders from battling Iraqui factions sign an agreement designed to cut down on the partisan bloodshed.
Speaking from Baghdad Friday, O'Malley told WBZ's Rod Fritz the privately-funded talks were carried out in Helsinki. He says his role mainly consisted of getting the different sides to Finland.
O'Malley previously has helped divided sects in Northern Ireland and South Africa come together. He says negotiators from those two countries were crucial helping the Iraquis hammer out this agreement. According to O'Malley, they showed the Iraquis that it's possible for people who have different viewpoints to co-exist peacefully, even if they don't agree.
