The NBA's Weak Link

Is there a worse officiated game in all of sports than NBA basketball?

I think not.

Let me say up front this is not an attempt to blame the games 3 and 4 losses by the Celtics in Atlanta to the officiating. This is just my observation that NBA officials are the worst regardless of the game or teams in question.

The NBA post season illustrates this sad fact beyond a doubt. Just ask Rajon Rondo of the Celtics or Acie Law of the Hawks; two young players who have been hit, smacked, thrown to the court while the officials give the benefit of the doubt to veteran players and refuse to call a foul. Unless the young player is the defender. Then a simple exhale in the general direction of a veteran player brings a whistle.

I honestly thought I was watching the Tim Donaghy Invitational Monday night. Some of the calls in game four between the Celtics and Hawks had me picking up the phone to call the AG's office asking for an investigation of the refs backgrounds, friends, acquaintances and bank statements ("And this $20,000 deposit is from who?").

It is beyond ludicrous.

One of my 'favorites' is the delayed call. The official watches the action, a player drives to the hoop and if the ball doesn't drop through the cylinder, we get a whistle. Not when the foul actually occurred, mind you. But after the official has thought about it, mulled it over in his (or her) mind and heard the reaction from 15,000 fans.

What is deemed a foul in the first quarter is not a foul in crunch time when the whistles get put away and they 'let them play'.

What would constitute assault on the street is ignored in the fourth quarter because the officials 'don't want to be the ones to determine the outcome'.

Uh, hello? Anybody home? Don't they realize that by swallowing their whistles in the 4th quarter they are doing just that?

It is a joke. A bad joke. Hopefully, NBA Commissioner David Stern will address the issue before long because it really cheapens the game.
