Temper tantrums in children ages of 3 to 6 are considered to be part of normal development. However, at times, temper tantrums may also be a sign of an underlying behavior problem.
In a recent study, researchers determined how do differentiate between a temper tantrum that is part of normal development and one that is an indicator of a behavioral issue.
Certain characteristics were present in temper tantrums in children with ADHD, a defiant personality, and depression.
It was more likely that the temper tantrums in these children occurred more frequently, 10 to 20 times a month, or, 5 or more times a day.
Also, the tantrums lasted for 25 minute or longer in contrast to the usual 3 to 4 minutes. It took longer for the child to calm down.
Tantrums in children with behavioral issues were more violent and self-injurious.
So, if you child’s temper tantrums have some of these characteristics, it would be worthwhile to discuss it with your child’s doctor. |
