Police investigate multi-vehicle crash in Allston

Boston (AP/WBZ Newsroom) -- Reports say the driver crashed his truck into several vehicles in Allston Thursday had a lengthy driving record.

Nine vehicles were damaged in a wild series of crashes over several blocks of Commonwealth Ave. and ended with an explosion and fire.

A source tells WBZ-TV the truck driver is 38-year-old Timothy Newton, of Revere Newton says he blacked out prior to the crash. WBZ-TV obtained Newton's driving records from the Registry of Motor Vehicles, which indicate he had his driver's license suspended several times. It also shows Newton has been in several accidents and has several speeding citations dating back to 1987.

It all began shortly after 7 a.m. when a delivery truck went out-of-control and slammed into a pick-up at Babcock Street, knocking it onto the trolley tracks of the Green Line.

The delivery truck then slammed into five parked cars and pushed a parked SUV nearly a block before it ended up crashing into the window of a business at the intersection of Comm. Ave. and Brighton Ave.

The truck then struck head-on with an eighth car which set off a massive explosion.

Police say three people, including Newton, were taken to the hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.

Fire department spokesman Steve McDonald said Boston police have begun an investigation.

Green B Line trolley service between Babcock and Blandford Streets was suspended for about three hours.
