Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson says he's never seen anything like it in the NBA Finals.
Jackson was referring to the descrepancy in free throws in game two at the T.D. Banknorth Garden where the Celtics enjoyed a 38-10 edge in free throws. What makes the imbalance tougher to swallow than elementary school cafeteria food is the fact that the Celtics have been the more aggressive and physical team. How is it possible, argues Jackson, that the more aggressive and physical team enjoys an almost 4-to-1 edge in free throws?
Hey, it happens. Just ask the Celtics. They endured a game like that against the Atlanta Hawks in round one of these NBA playoffs. If I am not mistaken (a minor miracle in itself if true) the C's were on the short end of that scenerio in Atlanta and it prompted my first diatribe about how bad the officiating is in the NBA.
But before Phil Jackson lays blame at the feet of the officials for his team's 0-2 hole, he needs to have a serious talk with his players about the toughness needed in the final round of the NBA playoffs. When Leon Powe goes coast-to-coast for an uncontested slam-dunk, there is something amiss with the Lakers' effort.
But hey, that's fine with me. I hope L.A. stands around with their collective fingers up their noses for game three tonight and game 4 on Thursday night.
