Boston, MA (WBZ Newsroom) -- State transportation officials unveil the details of a plan to tackle much-needed repairs on up to 300 “structurally deficient” bridges across the state.
The state will ask the legislature to borrow $3 billion against future federal grants and gas tax revenue to bring the bridges up to snuff over the next several years.
Work is slated to start within 90 days of legislative approval, which is expected, and includes improvements to the BU Bridge, the Longfellow Bridge, the Fore River Bridge, and the Neponset Bridge.
Officials promise to be mindful of traffic congestion, and say they won’t hand off control to private contractors like they did with the Big Dig.
The plan is a scaled-back version of the original for lack of enough money, but Governor Patrick calls it a substantial program, nonetheless.
Transportation Secretary Bernard Cohen says with this plan, the state will save over a billion dollars while adding jobs. |
