Boston -- A new study has some new ways of improving nutrition for kids.
It's not a surprising finding...when students at a group of five Philidelphia schools were given more nutritious food, the rate of obesity dropped. But what is surprising is how the schools made their nutrition lessons stick. Grace McGinley is a nurse at one of the schools, and she says teachers incorporated nutrition into everything from fractions to gym...She says they really got specific...
As a result, the kids started to pay more attention to what they ate...And they started eating healthier...And McGinley says the students listened, even if not always for the right reasons...
During the two-year experiment, they replaced sodas with fruit juice, scaled back snacks, and got rid of candy. Their efforts were successful overall, but there were still new overweight kids in the 5 schools...over 7% of them became overweight...but that compared to 15% of the kids becoming overweight in the schools that did not make nutrition changes. |
