My Starting Eight

If you are a sports fan then undoubtedly you have, at one time or another, listed your versions of the 'all-time' best teams.

It is only natural. Debating the merits of one athlete against another is as much a part of being a sports fan as paying homage to your particular idol.

Having been on this earth for little more than a half-century, I think I can say with some degree of certainty that my own particular all-star teams (baseball and basketball mostly; football and hockey to varying degrees) are pretty set. Today's abundance of performance-enhancing drugs and the never-ending (or so it seems) watering down via expansion of each pro sports league makes it highly unlikely one of today's athlete's will supplant my choices.

I think I will use this space - over a period of however many days, weeks, or months I choose - to offer my all-time teams.

Today, I'll start with baseball; my starting eight plus my starting pitching staff, which would be a five-man rotation. I'll save the bench and bullpen for another day.

One caveat: I'll stick to players in my lifetime (that I recall seeing play which omits the first three or four years of my life).

Therefore, without further adieu, my all-time baseball team lineup and starting pitchers:

1B         Willie McCovey
2B         Rod Carew
3B         Brooks Robinson
SS        Ozzie Smith
OF         Roberto Clemente
OF         Willie Mays
OF         Hank Aaron
C           Johnny Bench

P            Bob Gibson
P            Steve Carlton
P            Jim Palmer
P            Sandy Kofax
P            Tom Seaver
