Man convicted in high school stabbing death granted parole

Boston (AP)  -- A man convicted of second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing inside Dartmouth High School 15 years ago will soon be released from prison.

The state parole board announced Wednesday that Karter Reed would be paroled after completing a six-month pre-released program.

Reed, now 31, and two friends were charged with killing 16-year-old Jason Robinson after entering a classroom in April 1993 to settle a dispute with another student. Reed was the last of three still behind bars.

The parole board's executive director, Donald Giancioppo, said the panel confirmed its earlier 4-3 decision to release Reed, saying he deserves a second chance to become a "proactive member of society."

The victim's family opposed parole.
