Obama economic plan: 2.5M new jobs by 2011
President-elect Barack Obama promoted an economic plan Saturday he said would create 2.5 million jobs by rebuilding
roads and bridges and modernizing schools while developing alternative energy sources and more efficient cars. "These aren't just steps to pull ourselves out of this immediate crisis. These are the long-term investments in our economic future that have beenignored for far too long," Obama said in the weekly Democratic radio address.

City Counilor Turner: 'I am innocent'
FBI agents arrested a Boston city council member Friday after he was videotaped allegedly taking a $1,000 bribe from an undercover agent in an expanding investigation into corruption at City Hall and the Massachusetts Statehouse.  Turner was released on a $50,000 unsecured bond after a pretrial hearing in U.S. District Court in Worcester later Friday.  He is prohibited from traveling out of the state without permission and from destroying documents related to the case.  "I am absolutely and positively sure that a jury of my peers will come to the conclusion that I am innocent," Turner said outside the courthouse.
MassPike Raises defended
It may be pushing a major toll hike, but the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority has given out payraises of up to $31,000
to 13 managers over the past year. Executive Director Alan LeBovidge tells the Globe he's looking at the salary upgrades as a savings, since the pay increases coincided with the elimination of some management positions.
Tearful widow testifies in NH death hearing
Taking the stand Friday in Manchester, Laura Briggs said she lost the only stable man in her life and watched her kids lose their father. In her words: "That's hard to watch your kids go through." Mrs. Briggs said she grew up without a father, making it especially important to her to see her husband be a father to the couple's two young boys.
Chief says NH hazing incident left 7-inch burns
 Seven members of a New England College fraternity received burn marks about 7 inches long during a recent hazing incident, according to police who may bring felony charges as early as next week. All activities by the Sigma Alpha Beta have been suspended since the incident about two weeks ago.
Northeastern's Freeland for state ed commissioner
A committee seeking a new higher education commissioner has settled on former Northeastern University President Richard Freeland. Board of Education Chairman Fred Clark said Friday that Freeland's name will be the only one submitted for approval to the board when it meets December 5.

MA man says he thought stepdaughter hurt self
 A Massachusetts man accused of beating his stepdaughter so severely that she suffered a permanent brain injury -- triggering a right-to-die case -- testified Friday that he never hit her and believed his wife's claims that the girl injured herself.

An all-black Civil War infantry unit depicted in the Academy Award-winning moving "Glory," starring Denzel Washington, is making a real-life comeback. The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was reactivated Friday at a Statehouse ceremony and redesignated as the Massachusetts National Guard's ceremonial unit, which renders military honors at funerals and state functions.
Man guilty of manslaughter in restaurant brawl
A Worcester man who struck a father of two over the head with a chair during a brawl at a Denny's restaurant has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors say Maico Caceres slapped Jose Alvarado in the face then struck him with the chair during the fight in October 2006, which led to the 36-year-old Alvarado's death from sudden cardiac arrest.
MBTA crew members suspended after accidents
Two MBTA trolley crew members involved in separate accidents in the past week have been suspended without pay after testing positive for drugs or alcohol. Agency spokesman Joe Pesaturo told The Boston Globe the crews were tested immediately after the incidents, and were suspended while the formal process of firing them is completed.
