Insomnia affects people of all ages. A recent study was done to determine how often it occurred in adolescents.
For purposes of the study insomnia was defined as, difficulty falling asleep, waking up in the middle of the night, frequent awakenings, and early morning awakening.
Results of the study showed that 14% of the adolescents studied had at least one of the symptoms of insomnia. Many of these teenagers also experienced daytime tiredness.
More females than males were affected.
Some of the factors associated with insomnia were increased stress and lack of satisfaction with their lives.
It’s not unusual to have difficulty with sleeping when facing acute stressful situations.
However, if the insomnia is chronic, no matter what the person’s age, it should be discussed with the individual’s doctor to determine the cause and institute proper treatment.
This study serves as a reminder that insomnia doesn’t just occur in adults and it is a problem that many adolescents face. |
