High blood pressure or hypertension is very common cause of death due to a heart attack or stroke.
To prevent these dire consequences of three simple things need to be done.
First, making the diagnosis of hypertension. This is easy to do either in the doctor’s office or even in your home.
Next, if your blood pressure is high, see your doctor who will prescribe medications if necessary along with exercise and diet control.
And finally, taking the medication.
A recent study showed that taking the medication for many is not that easy to do.
Approximately 5,000 patients who were taking only one antihypertensive drug were studied.
The results were not very encouraging. After one year, almost half of the patients stopped taking the medication on their own.
Many missed doses and some just stopped taking them for a while and then restarted.
What is so unfortunate about these findings is that hypertension is usually a treatable disease. Most of the time all you need to do is take your medications.
