I was asked by a co-worker this morning if I would be including this weekend’s NASCAR event in Loudon NH in my sportscast.
No, I said. If it involves a motor, I don’t include it in my sports reports.
But, said my co-worker, there will be 100-thousand people in attendance.
Doesn’t matter, I said. The Westminster dog show garners more viewers than any NASCAR race and the dogs are infinitely more athletic than NASCAR drivers. But as much as I love that event, it isn’t included in my sports reports.
Professional race car drivers, be it NASCAR or formula-1, have perhaps, the greatest level of concentration on the planet. To drive for 2, 3, 4, 500 miles at 200 mph with other drivers just inches from you on all sides takes unbelievable focus.
But how athletic is it to sit on your keester for 500 miles? Not very athletic at all.
Tell you what. You take away the cars and have the drivers run for 500 miles and then I’ll give them a mention. Otherwise, forget about it.
