Firefighter memorial dedicated in Brockton

BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) -- The city of Brockton has dedicated a memorial to 13 firefighters killed in a theater fire, 67 years after the tragedy.

Officials on Saturday unveiled a 10 foot bronze statue of a fire fighter kneeling in prayer, with a fire helmet with the number 13 at his feet.

The men were killed in a March 10, 1941, blaze at the Strand Theatre, located about 100 feet from the City Hall amphitheatre where the memorial now stands.

Deputy Fire Chief Michael Williams said there was an "eerie" feeling being so close to where the firefighters were killed.

He said the memorial was overdue, and a moving reminder of the sacrifice the men made.

Lt. Governor Tim Murray attended the ceremony, as did 93-year-old retired Fire Chief Edward Burrell, the last surviving member of the force that responded to the blaze.
