Fatal apartment fire in Palmer

PALMER, Mass. (AP) -- A Palmer man has been killed in a fire at his apartment.

Palmer Fire Chief Alan J. Roy tells The Republican of Springfield that flames were shooting out the windows of the first-floor apartment at the Palmer Green complex when firefighters arrived just after 8 p.m. Tuesday. The fire was put out in about 15 minutes.

The man's name is not being released until his relatives are notified.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said his office is investigating, but a preliminary cause hasn't yet been determined.

Roy said the man lived on the first floor of a cluster of four apartments. The unit above his was heavily damaged.
