Ella J. Baker House damaged by fire

Boston (WBZ Newsroom)  -- The Boston Fire Department is investigating the cause of a late-night fire at the Ella J. Baker House in Dorchester.

A neighbor called and reported flames that were visible from the back of the building around 10:40 Wednesday night.

The house is run by Rev. Eugene Rivers and operates outreach programs for at-risk youth.

B
oard Chairman Leonard Lee tells WBZ Newsradio 1030 the fire apparently start in the back of the house and spread, damaging the inside and outside with smoke and water damage throughout.

Despite that Lee vows their programs will go on. Lee says, the work of the Ella J. Baker House "is not a facility or building...it's the work we do day to day. Our main focus right now, of course is getting the building back up and running, while thinking about the kids who get out of school and have a place...and we can continue with our program."

No one was in the building at the time. Lee says they were lucky because they could've been having an extensive prayer meeting or other program going on late.
