Boston -- Are there ways to make your kids less likely to develop diabetes?

Exposure to sun along with amounts of Vitamin D may play a strong role in keeping children from developing diabetes. That's the finding of researchers at the University of California at San Diego. It's the latest evidence that Vitamin D may play an important role in reducing the risk of diseases, including cancer. Dr. Cedric Garland is a professor at UCSD's School of Medicine and the study's author.

Garland says diabetes is more common in northern countries that have less sunlight than southern ones...

Type-1 diabetes is the second most common chronic disease in children, second only to asthma. About 15,000 new cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Results of the study were published in the online version of the scientific journal "Diabetologia."
