Christy's stores to be wind-driven

WEST YARMOUTH, Mass. (AP) -- The Christy's Market convenience store chain has found an answer to its search for cleaner energy blowing in the Cape Cod winds.

The Christy's store in West Yarmouth now has a trio of nine-foot high wind turbines on the roof of its gas island.

Christy's owner Christy Mihos, who ran for governor in 2006, said the turbines are expected to cover about 30 percent of the electricity bill for the store.

Similar turbines are planned for nine other Christy's stores on the Cape.

Mihos is enthusiastic about his store's turbines, but vocally opposed to a planned wind farm in Nantucket Sound.

Mihos is co-chairman of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, which opposes the Cape Wind project. Mihos owns two properties within sight of the planned wind farm.
