Bruins Trim Roster to 23 For Thursday's Season Opener

Boston, MA -- Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli today announced five roster moves that leaves head coach Claude Julien with 23 bodies to take to Colorado for Thursday's season-opener against the Avalanche. One of those players that will be making the trip is rookie Blake Wheeler.
Forward Peter Schaefer has been released and will be placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the Providence Bruins (AHL). Forwards Jeremy Reich and Nate Thompson have been placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment to Providence. Defenseman Matt Hunwick has been assigned to the Baby B's as well while forward Carl Soderberg has been assigned to Malmo (Sweden2).
Wheeler said he was nervous upon being called into Chiarelli's office on Tuesday but the GM quickly offered a congratulatory hand for making the opening-night roster.
The 22-yeare old Robbinsdale, MI native impressed Julien and the Bruins staff throughout training camp and the pre-season and the rewards for the 6-foot-4, 185 pound right wing is a spot on the bench Thursday when the Bruins open the regular season in Denver, Colorado against the Avalance.
