Bruins Open Season Tonight in Denver

Boston, MA (AP)  -- The Boston Bruins open the regular season tonight at Colorado with offensive star Patrice Bergeron and goalie Manny Fernandez back from injuries that sidelined them for most of last season.

And after their first year under coach Claude Julien, the Bruins want to do more than just make it to the postseason -- they want to win. They lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Montreal Canadiens.

The Bruins open with a four-game road trip. Their home opener is Oct. 20 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Julien says his veteran defense is solid.

Getting Bergeron back is "a big piece" for the offense, says center Marc Savard, the Bruins leading scorer last season. Bergeron didn't play last season after suffering a concussion Oct. 27 against Philadelphia.

Boston also has added veteran forwards Michael Ryder and Stephane Yelle, and rookie Blake Wheeler, the fifth pick in the 2004 draft.

The goalies are Tim Thomas and Fernandez. Tuukka Rask is waiting his turn with Providence of the AHL.
