Bodybuilding firefighter given 48 hours to prove he can't work

Boston (WBZ Newsroom) -- Bodybuilding firefighter Albert Arroyo has been given 48 hours to present medical evidence that he can’t work for the Boston Fire Department.
Arroyo, 46, had avoided the public spotlight for weeks, but showed up Tuesday to appeal his dismissal from the Boston Fire Department, after he repeatedly defied orders to return to work.
Spokesman Steve MacDonald says Arroyo has not been reinstated as a member of the Boston Fire Department, though the Commissioner is expected to make a final decision in the coming days.

Arroyo was caught competing in a bodybuilding competition while out on disability, receiving his salary tax-free.
Arroyo’s lawyer, Neil Osborne, maintains his client has done nothing wrong, and says the bodybuilding was a form of physical therapy to heal his aching back. He says Arroyo was never participating in a bodybuilding competition, but rather a form of “bodybuilding show and tell.”
Osborne tells WBZ his client is still not well enough to return to work, and plans to re-submit his application for a disability retirement, which was previously rejected by the Boston Retirement Board.
