Big turnout in Newton's override vote

Newton (WBZ Newsroom)  -- High voter turnout today in Newton where residents are getting their say on a proposed proposition 2 1/2 override.

The override would tack on about $370 extra dollars on the average homeowner's tax bill.

It would help fund the school department and other city services.

If voters turn the measure down, Newton's mayor has warned of layoffs in the school department as well as police and fire.

He also would close the city's four branch libraries.
