Boston -- Today's Segment:

We seem to be going against the trend...the U.S. is experiencing a baby boomlet while most other industrialized nations are not...

Stephanie Ventura, a demographer with the National center for Health Statistics says there were nearly 4.3-million births in 2006, and Ventura says those numbers haven't been seen in a long time...

An examination of global data shows the U.S. has a higher fertility rate than every country in Continental Europe, as well as Austrailia, Canada and Japan. Ventura says these are not typical numbers...

Demographers say it's too soon to know if the sudden increase in births is the start of a trend. Births were more common in nearly every age and racial or ethnic group. Still, U.S. birthrates are not what they were in the 1950's and early 60's, when they were nearly twice as high, and large families were much more common. The recent birth numbers are more a result of many women having a couple of kids each, rather than a smaller number of mothers each having several children.
